the earth works
its way through
another day

the world thinks
another way

toe from toe
to tell, to know
each slip and grip
and furl and curl

without clever cover

I feel every
folded leaf and stem
sink in earth’s laboratory
stride on cracking history
skip round spike-thorn botany
scale mini-mountain geology

step out, step on
to fall
in step
